Artist-designed public artworks, completed together, at East Village and Culture Mile in summer 2026.

Giant Canvases is a pair of participatory public artworks I created for The Intrepid Collective at East Village in Stratford and Culture Mile in Moorgate, London.
For each one, I drew an original, place-responsive illustration, bringing local architecture, green spaces and everyday life together on one large canvas. On the day, people of all ages added colour and detail until the artwork was complete.
The Story
The starting point was a location brief, not an enlarged colouring sheet. I turned recognisable places, plants and moments of community life into carefully balanced illustrations. Each composition had to hold together as an artwork while leaving room for many hands.
I thought of it in the spirit of a giant kolam: a shared act of mark-making, where individual gestures build a collective whole.
From Brief to Composition
The client sent references for Culture Mile: landmarks, green spaces, local activity and botanical drawings. My job was to turn them into one coherent, illustrated public scene that would still work as an artwork once many hands had added colour.

The brief: reference images supplied by the client, including Finsbury Circus, Guildhall Yard, the Barbican, London Wall Place and botanical drawings.

The first step: my composition, drawn on canvas in the studio before the public added colour.
East Village
At East Village, I brought together the area’s skyline, parkland and neighbourhood life: botanical borders, water, wildlife, deckchairs and a nod to the Olympic legacy. The image offered different scales of participation, from filling a single leaf to working into a larger scene, so children, adults and families could contribute side by side.
Culture Mile
For Culture Mile, the client supplied references to local landmarks and green spaces, including the Barbican, Guildhall Yard, Finsbury Circus and London Wall Place. I interpreted these as one illustrated public scene rather than a collage of photographs, combining architecture, planting and activity. Through the day, participants gradually brought the drawing to life with colour.
My Role
I was the artist and designer of both canvases. I interpreted the brief, drew and composed each image, and decided how much detail or openness each part needed.
I also designed the invitation to take part. People could choose a small motif or a larger area, stay a few minutes or much longer, and join in without any drawing experience. Accessibility wasn’t an add-on to the event; it was built into the illustration itself. On the day, I supported the making while keeping the visual direction coherent.
I designed a coherent artwork first, then created the space for people to make it their own.
Community Impact
- Around 70 people took part across the two events: about 50 at East Village and 20 at Culture Mile.
- Children, adults and families worked side by side on the same artwork.
- Every contribution stayed visible in the finished pieces.
- Both finished canvases went to the client after the events.
