Fulham Through the Seasons

A Community Mural Celebrating Local Life

On 29th October 2024, Fulham Good Neighbours, in partnership with Higgins Partnerships, proudly unveiled “Fulham Through the Seasons”, a vibrant 14-metre mural created by Art Club members whose collective 470 years in Fulham capture the borough’s rich history and character. Now displayed on the hoardings at the Hartopp and Lannoy project site on Dawes Road, the mural showcases Fulham’s iconic landscapes, changing seasons, and deep-rooted community spirit.

Local residents and supporters gathered to celebrate the unveiling, making it a significant moment for both the charity and Fulham. Following the ceremony, attendees joined a celebratory tea at Rosaline Hall, Fulham Good Neighbours’ community centre, where the contribution of each Art Club member to this community masterpiece was celebrated.

A Thoughtful, Accessible Approach to Mural-Making

While the developers initially envisioned a traditional painted mural, the age group and mobility needs of the Art Club members meant that on-site painting was not feasible. Additionally, the group primarily works with watercolour, making the switch to acrylic paints and vertical outdoor surfaces impractical.

In response, Roopa devised a creative and inclusive solution: each week, she curated a collection of reference images aligned with the seasons of Fulham—its parks, oak trees, wildlife, markets, and architecture—which served as inspiration for in-class painting sessions. These guided prompts allowed participants to paint with confidence in their preferred medium.

Over the course of several months, the group produced more than 300 original watercolours—three times the number expected. Each piece was carefully scanned, and in a labour of love, Roopa digitally curated and composed them into a cohesive digital mural collage. No colour correction was applied—each artwork retained its original texture and tone, preserving the authenticity and personality of every contributor.

A Visual Story of Fulham Through Every Season

The final mural tells a visual story of Fulham’s landscapes and life through the year—from blooming spring gardens and lively summer markets to golden autumn trees and peaceful winter skies. Its layers reflect the borough’s ever-evolving identity, shaped by those who know it best.

Local residents and supporters gathered to celebrate the unveiling, followed by a tea at Rosaline Hall, where the artists were honoured for their creativity, commitment, and community spirit. The project has since become a landmark of local pride—a collaborative, intergenerational celebration of Fulham’s soul.

“This mural is more than just art—it’s a visual celebration of Fulham’s rich history, painted by those who know and love it best,” said Roopa. “Every brushstroke reflects a memory, a feeling, or a moment shared by someone who has walked these streets for decades.”
